What a poetic essay - "low in the water, half-man, half-boat, a centaur with paddle-arms". I loved reading this piece. I have yet to kayak this creation of a river, but I am determined to now. This summer. Thank you for sharing your magic, D'Arcy - and that of Dylan and Dixon.
Thanks for this, D’Arcy. It’s good to know that other people from watery places have come to Springfield and survived. As someone who lived most of her adult life in Maine, I can attest that no matter where you are in the state, you’re never more than a mile or two from water or wilderness. Here -- not so much.... But I'm very impressed with the renewal of Buck Creek. Good for Springfield!
I feel good about what Springfield is doing in its parks and waterways and the downtown area. As someone who goes to the dog park nearly every day, I feel a sense of ownership in the city now. Maine sounds gorgeous and I understand why you miss it.
I love kayaking, and I love this portrait. Kayaking is one of the tiny handful of sporting activities I bonded with instantly on initial introduction. An hour on a peaceful lake passes in a minute, and simultaneously a minute magically expands into an hour.
This is a delightful story. I just tried kayaking for the first time and loved it! It was a on a local man made lake at a park and nature preserve so I’m thankful we have that nearby.
Jeri, thanks for reading the profile of Kent. Glad you're able to get out and enjoy the beautiful world in a kayak. It's a little hard on my knees and hips and also I was wearing a spray skirt, which felt like a tight pair of Spanx, but I think I could get the hang of things with proper sizing.

What a treat to read your writing and lean into your state! Makes me want to come visit! 😊❤️
I would dearly love it if you two would visit! It would be a blast. Ohio is lovely!!!!

For a birdwatcher/birdlover like you, I bet kayaking is the way to go! Thank you for reading this.

What a fabulous portrait of one man's benign obsession. You really capture his larger-than-life enthusiasm for kayaking, his proselytizing zeal.
Kent is so fun to be with. He gave me a "lesson" in the Witt pool, and then in Buck Creek itself. Wow!!!!
Lovely!!!!
Thanks, Mary Ellen. I can see why people love kayaking so...especially if they've got that paddle stroke down and it's muscle memory.
